Incident in the garden
Yesterday I was lying in the garden minding my own business, when Steinlen, the irritating ginger cat, came bounding up to me.

I decided to put my question to him.

"Steinlen," I said in a voice that was both welcoming and enquiring, "do you know the personal development secrets that no one ever talks about?"

He fixed me with one of his looks. Then he said, "Indeed I do."

My heart jumped. I was onto something.

"In that case," I said, "would you please tell me what they are?"

He stretched to his full height and looked me straight in the eye. "No."

"Why not?" I demanded.

"Can't talk about it," he said and strolled off.

Tiger on a mission
At that moment Lowrey, the tortoise shell cat, came charging into view like a tiger on a mission.

He'd obviously overheard the previous conversation because he immediately said in a friendly voice, "Ask me what the personal development secrets are that no one ever talks about. Go on ask me."

At last I was getting somewhere.

"OK," I said. "What are these secrets that no one ever talks about?"

He paused for a moment. When he finally spoke his words had a note of deep frustration in them, not to mention anger.

"Don't ask," he snapped. "Just don't ask."

He strode off towards the hole in the garden fence, a mass of furry exasperation.
